Beautiful and moving, and so well written. It captures so much of Israel's ethos and the grief of each generation. I served on the Golan during reserve duty for ten years and would stop at every memorial I came across. Later I did a day trip, visiting every memorial on the Golan, even finding those I didn't know about, and read the stories at each one. It was a homage and so meaningful.
Thank you so much, Paul. Thank you for your note and for your service. I lived in Israel for most of my adult life. My sons and my ex-husband served. I have had so many friends experiencing the unbearable fear for their children, spouses and friends. And sometimes the fear ends with the terrible loss. But I also miss the golden hills of the Golan Heights and the smell of wild thyme and oak trees. The story tried to balance grief and memory and love for the country. I am so glad it spoke to you.
